Full STEAM Ahead — Charting the Course for ScienceWorks

As we look ahead to our 25th year of operation next year, ScienceWorks is launching a new strategic planning initiative, and we want you to be part of it.

Our process is called
Full STEAM Ahead: Charting the Course for ScienceWorks, and it’s grounded in a methodology called Appreciative Inquiry: a collaborative, strength-based approach rooted in listening, connection, and positive change.

ScienceWorks has always been a community-driven museum. Ever since we opened in 2002, we’ve aspired to be an engaging, hands-on hub for science, creativity, and discovery in Ashland and the greater Rogue Valley. Now, we’re asking for your help to shape our next chapter.

Why Appreciative Inquiry?

Rather than focusing on problems or deficits, Appreciative Inquiry uses storytelling to uncover the organization’s greatest strengths — the fuel that drives positive, lasting change. Through conversations and connection, we’ll build a shared vision for the future rooted in trust, pride, and collective wisdom. We’ll be exploring the “4-D Cycle”: Discover, Dream, Design, and Destiny, a proven model for creating sustainable, community-informed transformation.

Paul Sheldon from the CREST at Willow-Witt offered this reflection after participating in one of our early sessions, “Special thanks for being such a good listener and for the great ‘appreciative inquiry’ conversation starters!”

How You Can Participate

Right now, we have a Full STEAM Ahead Appreciative Inquiry Station set up in Kranzler Hall, where visitors can share their thoughts, memories, and hopes for the future of ScienceWorks. Whether you’re a longtime supporter or a first-time guest, your voice matters.

We’ll also be conducting one-on-one interviews and small group conversations over the coming months, not just with our most dedicated fans, but also with those who don’t yet know us. We want a wide range of voices at the table as we imagine a more inclusive, impactful ScienceWorks.

Community leaders Irene Kai and David Wick recently joined one of our conversations and shared their enthusiasm, “We look forward to co-creating together.”

What Comes Next

At the heart of this process is a belief in the power of shared vision and possibility. With your input, we’ll build a plan that reflects our values, deepens our community connections, and strengthens our ability to meet future challenges with creativity and care.

Stay tuned for more opportunities to engage, and in the meantime, stop by Kranzler Hall and add your voice to the conversation. We can’t wait to hear from you.

Full STEAM Ahead!

Let’s imagine the future of ScienceWorks, together.
