Hands-On Community Mural with Ursula Barton

Two children create colorful splashes on a white outdoor wall with paint balloons

What happens when you give a community hundreds of paint-filled balloons and a blank wall? You get the beginning of something beautiful. 🎨

During our Books & Brews Nostalgic Book Fair in September, more than 850 paint balloons were thrown at the exterior wall of ScienceWorks, creating a colorful, completely community-made foundation for a new mural by artist Ursula Barton.

In this video, see clips from the Community Mural Project and hear Ursula explain her creative process and how she transformed those colorful splashes into a large-scale artwork inspired by the incredible patterns found in nature, including feathers, butterfly wings, reptile scales, fish skin, and microscopic life.

The finished mural is a celebration of science, art, nature, and the community that makes ScienceWorks possible.

Thank you to everyone who picked up a balloon, threw some paint, and helped leave their mark on ScienceWorks! 💚
