June Gallery of Heroes: Pride Month

In celebration of Pride Month, our Gallery of Heroes exhibit honors five remarkable LGBTQIA+ professionals.

This June, in celebration of Pride Month, our Gallery of Heroes exhibit honors five remarkable LGBTQIA+ professionals — past and present — whose work in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) has left a lasting impact. Each month, we spotlight inspiring individuals whose work continues to shape the world — and this month, we’re proud to showcase trailblazers who reflect the strength and diversity of the LGBTQIA+ community. Stop by to explore their stories and celebrate the power of representation in STEAM.

ScienceWorks Hands-On Museum presents: Gallery of Heroes - a Pride Month Exhibition. Join us in celebrating the LGBTQIA+ community and their contributions to the world of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM).
“Just as we need diversity in all spaces, we need diversity in the legislature as well. We need diversity of professions, we need scientists in the legislatures, not just people with law degrees. We need people of color. We need immigrants. We need queer people. All of those opinions and lived experiences need to be reflected in our laws and our policies. Becoming and working with policy-makers is crucial for positive change.”
-Dr. Biswajit Paul
“I can’t help but think that in my own life I’ve been inspired by works from other people, and I maintain key quotes of people who impacted me, I have tables of these. And when people tell me my words inspire them I can’t help but feel that I am leaving something behind for them to keep.”
-Lynn Ann Conway
“Studying whether there's life on Mars or studying how the universe began, there's something magical about pushing back the frontiers of knowledge. That's something that is almost part of being human, and I'm certain that will continue.”
-Dr. Sally Ride
“Dance is for everybody. I believe that the dance came from the people and that it should always be delivered back to the people.” -Alvin Ailey Jr.
“Sometimes people think of theoretical mathematics as divorced from real-world applications. In fact, there are compelling justice issues where quantitative tools make a difference.”
-Dr. Lily Khadjavi
