The films will be shown back-to-back with a short intermission in between, followed by a discussion led by Executive Director, Gabriela Chavarria. Admission to the film screenings is free and includes entry to the Science Theater only. Museum exhibits require separate admission. Space is limited, so please book your tickets in advance.

🎥 Chasing Time

If a single photo can inspire change, what can a million images do?

Over the course of the 15-year Extreme Ice Survey project, photographer James Balog and his team brought some of the world’s first and most compelling visual evidence of climate change to the global stage as he depicted the rapid melting of glaciers around the world. Thoughtfully helmed by acclaimed director Jeff Orlowski-Yang (Chasing Ice, Chasing Coral, The Social Dilemma) and first-time filmmaker Sarah Keo, Chasing Time is a meditative exploration of time and mortality, following James and his crew as they bring the decades-long project to a close, cataloging more than one million images in the process. The short documentary reunites James and the Emmy-award-winning team behind Chasing Ice to capture the end of the epic undertaking and spotlight the power of an intergenerational effort to seed hope and inspire action toward a sustainable future. A beautiful tribute to the power of images and the importance of mentorship, the team examines the legacy their efforts have made on the world.

🎥 Herders at the Edge

As the Naadam summer festival approaches, horse trainer Amraa and 11-year-old jockey Jantska prepare their stallion for the race. Jantska dreams of becoming a racehorse trainer, but Amraa hesitates to encourage this path, as climate change increasingly threatens their way of life. Set in Mongolia, one of the world’s most vulnerable countries to climate change, the film reveals how even the cherished tradition of horse racing is being impacted. Through the story of Amraa’s family, it portrays the physical and emotional struggles of Mongolia’s broader nomadic communities, offering a perspective on the cultural erosion intensified by climate change.

Produced by Zaya Delgerjargal, a 2024 Yale Reporting Fellow and Climate Science Fellow at Reuters, this short film reveals how global challenges ripple into cultural traditions and personal dreams.
