Illuminating Science Inquiry
The Illuminating Science Inquiry program is an innovative staff development workshop that has actively trained Southern Oregon elementary teachers in the process of scientific inquiry for the past 10 years. A ScienceWorks professional works hand-in-hand with teachers and students in the classroom for four days, in ninety minute sessions (total of 6 hours) to model the inquiry process.
"My 3rd/4th grade class participated in the science inquiry program. I prefer having ScienceWorks come to my class. Although we love going there, my students came away with so much more having the program come to our setting. They looked forward to having the instructor come each of the days to build on their experiences. I thought the writing piece was very valuable and it helped me do a better job of doing this."
- Tamara Foster, Wilson Elementary in Medford, OR
Students are introduced to the general topic and methods of science inquiry through an active process of observation and hands-on experimentation, and will learn to formulate scientific questions and discover answers through the design and analysis of their own scientific investigations. Upon completion of the program, students have created a practice scientific inquiry work sample that prepares them to create an independent, authentic work sample in later lessons.
Classroom teachers participate at every stage of the inquiry process and receive complementary science inquiry curricula for future use. NEW THIS YEAR: Teachers who host a week of this program may then check out materials for select units to use in their own classroom for a week. Additionally, the ScienceWorks instructor coaches teachers in evaluating student work samples using state assessment rubrics.
