Bright Lights Big Science Weekend

Bright Lights Big Science

Join us December 21 & 22 for an illuminating weekend focusing on the wonders of light science!  Build pieces for our LED lit city, direct a laser through a maze of mirrors to the target, see how light interacts with objects in the Shadow Theater, and create an ornament or tree topper by creating a simple plastic cast!

Schedule of Events

Saturday

11:00 - 12:30
City of Lights Activity: Help us create a miniature city inside ScienceWorks!  Were constructing buildings, adding buses, and designing landscapes out of cardboard boxes.  Add your own personal touch by adding an LED to your creation.  When were done, we hope to have a whole city full of lights!  (Suggested Ages: 5 and up)

12:00, 2:00 & 4:00
Carbon Light Demo: Carbon can be used to create light on different scales.  From a stage light, called an arc-light, to a homemade light bulb, explore how light is created!
Spark in the Dark Demo: Did you know you can create light using a Lifesaver candy?  Enjoy this refreshing demonstration as you create light in your mouth!

2:30 - 4:00
Laser Maze Activity: Can you get a beam of light from the laser to the target?  Use the properties of reflection to change the path of the laser to hit the target for a refraction surprise!  (Suggested Ages: 8 and up)

Sunday

11:00 - 12:30
Shadow Theater Activity: The art of Shadow Theater has existed for thousands of years and is found in cultures around the world. Now its your turn. Come play with light, shapes, and shadows and create your own story! (Suggested Ages:  All Ages)

12:00, 2:00 & 4:00
Carbon Light Demo: Carbon can be used to create light on different scales.  From a stage light, called an arc-light, to a homemade light bulb, explore how light is created!
