Who We Are

ScienceWorks Hands-On Museum was founded in 2001 with the mission to inspire wonder among children and adults, and stimulate creative exploration through interactive science and the arts.

This science center serves more than 40,000 visitors each year. The mostly volunteer staff creates, maintains and helps visitors experience nearly 100 interactive exhibits, live science shows and an outdoor garden. There are educational programs, from an on-site School Program and an Illuminating Science Inquiry Outreach Program that supports teacher development, as well as public workshops, lectures, summer festivals and science camps.

Year-Round Exhibits help visitors explore energy, anatomy, chemistry, perception, motion, engineering, art and more in a mind-challenging, fun way. Performances and activities change frequently, offering something new every visit.

ScienceWorks, which leases a 26,000-square-foot building, is funded through grants, donations, fundraising events and nearly 1,800 member families. It depends on volunteer efforts. The center began with a cooperative arrangement with the Kirlin Foundation and Southern Oregon University, and support from founders Sharon and John Javna and Dave and Marge Bernard. Over 86% of museum visitors come from outside of Ashland.

Committed to sharing resources with other nonprofit community organizations, ScienceWorks is serving the region through collaborations with North Mountain Park, Southern Oregon Goodwill Industries, the Southern Oregon Jobs Council, Living Opportunities, the Southern Oregon Education Service District, Southern Oregon Historical Society, Southern Oregon Public Television, Turtle Bay Exploration Park, Oregon Museum of Science and Industry (OMSI) in Portland and the Exploratorium in San Francisco.

The museum was recently nominated for the Distinguished Service Award presented by the Confederation of Oregon School Administrators for "individual or organizations outside the field of education that make significant contributions to the education of young people in Oregon."

ScienceWorks is a member of the Association of Science and Technology Centers and the Northwest Association of Youth Museums.

ScienceWorks exhibits have received national and international attention and have been sold to the Singapore Science Center, Technopolis in Belgium, Miami Museum of Science, Calgary Science Centre and other museums in the U.S.
